Price out enough pavers to cover a full patio or a long walkway, and the total can climb into the hundreds of dollars before you’ve laid a single one. What most homeowners don’t realize is that a paver is just shaped concrete, and shaped concrete is something you can make yourself, in your own driveway, for a fraction of the retail cost. With the right form and a few inexpensive add-ins, you can turn a plain bag of concrete mix into pavers that pass for cut stone.
There are two ways to approach this project: a basic version and a deluxe version. Both start with the same core idea. You’ll just decide how much extra effort and material you want to put in.
What Materials Do You Need to Make Basic Concrete Pavers?
A basic paver keeps things simple. You only need three things:
- A bag of concrete mix
- Something to mix it in
- A form to pour it into
A form is just a mold. It gives the wet concrete its shape while it hardens. Forms come in many shapes and sizes. One example used a form measuring roughly 6 by 12 by 2 inches, with a textured top surface that gave the finished paver a stone or slate-like look, even in the basic version.
If you pour plain concrete into a form, let it harden, and then pop it out, you end up with a basic paver. Based on one bag-to-paver test, a single 60-pound bag of concrete produced about 7 and a half pavers this way. At that rate, each paver cost roughly 50 cents to make. Your own results will vary depending on the size of your form and the type of mix you use.
How to Upgrade Basic Pavers to a Stone-Look Deluxe Finish
A deluxe paver starts the same way but adds three extra ingredients. Each one improves the color, strength, or durability of the finished piece.
1. Concrete tint. Plain concrete dries to a pale gray color. To get a darker tone that looks more like natural stone, a small amount of concrete tint, about one ounce per batch, gets mixed into the water before it’s combined with the dry concrete.
2. Fiberglass reinforcement. Toward the end of mixing, a handful of concrete fiberglass reinforcement gets added to the batch. Fiberglass reinforcement is made of tiny fibers mixed into the concrete to help hold it together. This makes the finished paver stronger and less likely to crack.
3. Concrete sealer. After the paver is fully removed from its mold, a coat of concrete sealer is applied to the top surface. A sealer is a protective coating that helps the concrete resist wear, moisture, and staining over time, which extends how long the paver lasts outdoors.
How to Set Up a Simple Concrete Mixing Station
Getting a consistent, bubble-free mix takes a little setup, but nothing complicated.
A 5-gallon bucket works well as a mixing container because it’s easy to lift and pour into multiple forms at once. But mixing straight down into a bucket sitting flat on the ground creates a problem: a handheld mixer struggles to reach the corners at the bottom, and dry, unmixed concrete tends to hide there.
A simple fix is to build a small frame, out of basic scrap wood, that holds the bucket tilted at an angle instead of sitting flat. This one change solves two problems at once. First, tilting the bucket brings the corners within easier reach of a handheld mixer, so there’s less chance of leaving dry pockets behind. Second, an angled bucket can be rotated as you mix, which keeps working fresh material into the blade path instead of grinding the same spot over and over. The result is a more even, fully-blended batch with none of the dry, crumbly patches that ruin a pour. The frame itself takes only a few minutes to put together.
For actually blending the concrete, a handheld concrete mixer works fine for small batches like this.
What’s the Right Concrete-to-Water Ratio for Pavers?
Getting a repeatable, predictable ratio matters. If your mix is inconsistent, you’ll either run out of material partway through or end up with leftover concrete that goes to waste.
Using a standard container, like a 32-ounce yogurt container, as a measuring scoop helps keep every batch the same. For one particular form size, the working ratio came out to 9 containers of dry concrete mix to 2 containers of water. This produced a dry, workable mix that filled every form completely with no leftover material.
Keep in mind that this ratio depends heavily on the size and number of your forms. It’s worth testing a batch or two before committing to a full pour, since ratios that work for one form size may not be exactly right for another.
How Do You Remove Air Bubbles From Concrete Pavers?
Before pouring, coat the inside of the form with a silicone mold release. A mold release is a coating that keeps the finished concrete from sticking to the form, so it slides out cleanly once it’s cured.
Once the concrete is poured, air bubbles can get trapped inside, which creates weak spots in the finished paver. A vibration table solves this problem. A vibration table is a flat surface with a motor attached underneath that shakes gently, causing trapped air to rise out of the wet concrete. In one example, running the vibration table for about 5 minutes was enough to remove the majority of the bubbles.
If you build your own vibration table, two details matter most:
- Secure the trays. Design the table so your forms sit in place and won’t slide off while it’s shaking.
- Keep it level. An unlevel table will cause the wet concrete to settle unevenly, which can leave you with crooked pavers.
A cheap vibration motor mounted to a simple wood frame is enough to get the job done.
How Long Do Homemade Concrete Pavers Need to Cure?
Concrete needs time to harden before it’s ready for use. As a general guideline, allow about 24 hours for the concrete to cure inside the form. After removing the pavers, wait roughly another 24 hours before walking on them, just to be safe. In total, plan on about two days between pouring and putting the pavers to use.
How Much Does It Cost to Make Your Own Concrete Pavers?
Here’s how the numbers worked out in this example:
- Basic pavers (no tint, fiberglass, or sealer): roughly 50 to 60 cents each, depending on the size and thickness of the paver.
- Store-bought stone-look pavers, used as a rough comparison: between $2 and $4 each.
- Deluxe DIY pavers (with tint, fiberglass, and sealer): about $1 to $1.15 each.
That puts the deluxe, stone-finished pavers at roughly a third to half the price of a comparable store-bought option.
One note on this comparison: the cost of reusable tools, like the mixer, the vibration motor, and the wood frames, wasn’t factored into the per-paver price. These tools get reused for other projects around a property, such as mixing concrete for other jobs or even sifting compost, so their cost isn’t tied to pavers alone. If you’re buying tools specifically for a one-time paver project, factor that into your own budget.
Is the Time Investment Worth It?
Before you tally up the savings, it’s worth addressing the question every DIY cost comparison eventually runs into: what about the hours spent standing at the mixing table?
It’s a fair question, and there’s no single right answer. But it’s worth reframing before you let it talk you out of starting. Time spent on a new project isn’t wasted time, it’s tuition. You’re paying it forward into a skill you now own, and unlike money spent on store-bought pavers, that skill doesn’t disappear once the walkway is finished. There’s also a kind of payoff that a receipt can’t capture. Standing back and looking at something you built with your own hands, from a bag of dry concrete mix to a finished stone-look walkway, delivers a sense of accomplishment that a delivery truck simply can’t. It’s also the only way to get pavers that are actually yours: a custom color, a custom shape, a custom finish, none of it pulled off a shelf.
And then there’s the part that rarely makes it into a cost breakdown at all. Mixing, pouring, and hauling concrete is physical work. It moves your body, occupies your hands, and quiets your mind in a way that few other chores manage. For some, that alone is worth more than the money saved.
None of this means the hours don’t count. It just means they’re not purely a cost. If time is the only thing holding you back from a project like this, it may be worth picking up a bag of concrete and finding out for yourself.
